When AI Only Sounds Convincing

When AI Only Sounds Convincing

There’s a new problem with AI that has nothing to do with whether it can do the job.

It’s whether we believe the answer it gives us.

AI has become remarkably good at sounding confident. Ask it to summarise a report and you’ll usually get a clear, concise response in seconds. The trouble starts when that polished answer happens to be wrong.

That’s the idea behind our latest advertising campaign for Trace Solutions, the property management software specialists.

Rather than producing another film celebrating everything AI can do, we decided to look at what happens when it gets something spectacularly wrong – and does so without the slightest hesitation.

AI in the Workplace

An 800% problem

The film begins with a familiar office task: a long client statement needs to be reduced to a simple headline.AI takes care of it.

The result sounds impressive:

“Yields are predicted to rise by 800%!”

It’s concise. It’s confident. And it’s completely untrue.

When challenged, the AI effectively sticks to its guns because, well, the statement sounds plausible.

That simple exchange gets to the heart of the issue. The danger with AI isn’t necessarily that it produces obvious nonsense. It’s that it can produce something that looks and sounds credible enough to pass without being questioned.

Useful doesn’t mean infallible

There’s no question that AI has enormous potential.

It can analyse information, automate routine tasks, identify patterns and handle work that would previously have taken people considerably longer. Used properly, it can make businesses more efficient and give people more time to focus on the work that really needs them.

But speed and confidence aren’t the same as accuracy.

That distinction is particularly important in property management, where decisions depend on reliable information, accurate reporting and careful financial management.

That’s where Trace Solutions comes in.

Its software is designed to help property professionals manage complex portfolios through accurate information, reporting, accounting and automation. The technology does the heavy lifting, but that doesn’t mean people should switch off their judgement.

Keeping humans in the loop

The point of the campaign isn’t to suggest that AI should be avoided.

It’s to suggest that it should be used intelligently.

There are times when an AI-generated answer can save significant time. There are also times when the sensible response is to stop, question the result and get a human to check it.

After all, if someone tells you your yields are about to increase by 800%, it probably deserves a second look.

For this campaign, we chose humour as a way of making that point without turning it into another lecture about the future of technology.

Sometimes, the easiest way to demonstrate the limitations of AI is simply to let it demonstrate them itself.

Trace Solutions. Giving power to the people.
