The Ripple Effect – Celebrating 25 Years of Gates Cambridge

At Cambridge Filmworks, we believe that the most powerful stories are not simply told – they are felt. They ripple outward, shaping perspectives, inspiring action, and reminding us of what is possible when talent meets opportunity. That belief sat at the heart of our partnership with the Gates Cambridge, as we came together to mark a remarkable milestone: 25 years of one of the world’s most prestigious and impactful scholarship programmes.

To celebrate this anniversary, Gates Cambridge set out not to look inward, but outward – toward the world their alumni are helping to transform. The result was The Ripple Effect: a suite of 25 films, each just 60 seconds long, each centred on a Gates Cambridge alum, and each capturing how one scholarship can spark change far beyond Cambridge.

A Global Story, Told by Those Living It

From the outset, this project was about authenticity. Gates Cambridge scholars are spread across continents and disciplines, tackling some of the world’s most complex challenges. From cancer research and climate conservation to space exploration, public policy, and science communication.

Among those featured are astronaut Kayla Barron, cancer specialist Anand Jeyasekharan, American politician and ultramarathon runner Greg Nance, conservationist Alberto Borges, author and social historian Anna Malaika Tubbs, biologist Jerelle Joseph, physicist and broadcaster Niraj Lal, and astronomer Allison Strom, to name just a few. Their stories are as diverse as their fields, yet united by a shared thread: the belief that knowledge, when placed in the right hands, can change lives.

Rather than flying crews around the world, we embraced a collaborative approach. Each film was self-shot by the alumni themselves, wherever they were based. From laboratories and offices to observatories, classrooms, and outdoor landscapes, these scholars invited us into their worlds with remarkable openness.

Our role at Cambridge Filmworks was to guide, support, and shape. Working closely with each participant to ensure their story was captured with clarity, confidence, and cinematic impact. Through remote direction, storytelling workshops, and hands-on editorial collaboration, we helped turn raw, personal footage into films that feel intimate, assured, and deeply human.

25 Films for 25 Years of Impact

Each of the 25 films stands alone, yet together they form something far greater: a portrait of a global community in motion. In just 60 seconds per film, viewers are introduced to extraordinary individuals and the ripple effects of their work – how ideas sparked at Cambridge have gone on to influence policy, advance science, protect ecosystems, and expand our understanding of the universe.

Editing and producing the series was both a creative challenge and a privilege. Our team crafted a consistent visual and narrative identity across the films, while allowing each voice to remain distinct. The result is a compelling, cohesive series that reflects both the excellence of the Gates Cambridge scholarship and the individuality of its alumni.

The title, The Ripple Effect, captures the essence of the programme perfectly. A single scholarship creates a moment of opportunity. That moment becomes a career. That career becomes impact. And that impact travels – across borders, generations, and disciplines.

By empowering alumni to film themselves and speak in their own words, we created a series that feels honest, modern, and emotionally resonant – a true reflection of a scholarship programme that continues to shape the future.
