The Ripple Effect: Celebrating 25 Years of Gates Cambridge
Gates Cambridge is one of the world’s most respected educational scholarships. But prestige alone doesn’t change lives – people do.
At Cambridge Filmworks, we’ve always believed that the most powerful stories aren’t told about people, but with them. Stories with authenticity, where lived experience matters more than spectacle, and where a single, honest voice can inspire and create real change.
So when Gates Cambridge approached us to help celebrate their 25th anniversary, we knew this couldn’t be a conventional commemorative film. Gates Cambridge isn’t a conventional scholarship. It’s a global catalyst – consistently reshaping the world through the people it empowers. The question was how do we honour the impact of 25 years?
The answer became The Ripple Effect. The Ripple Effect showcases what happens after the scholarship. After the graduation. After Cambridge.

25 Years. 25 Films. One Global Story.
Together with Gates Cambridge, we created a suite of 25 inspirational, 60-second films, each one spotlighting a Gates Cambridge alumnus and the extraordinary work they’ve gone on to do after their time at the University of Cambridge.
Each film is short by design but expansive in meaning. In just one minute, audiences glimpse how an idea nurtured in Cambridge can ripple outward across continents, disciplines, and lives.
From space to cancer research. From conservation to public policy. From storytelling to science communication. This series isn’t about what alumni were at Cambridge- it’s about what they’ve become today.

Filmmaking Without Borders
One of the boldest creative decisions we made together was also the simplest: every film would be self-shot by the alumni themselves.
These weren’t crews parachuting in. No studios. No artificial lighting rigs.
Instead, alumni filmed themselves from laboratories, observatories, offices, nature reserves, homes, and field sites across the globe. From different time zones, cultures, and working realities. Our role at Cambridge Filmworks was deeply collaborative. We worked closely with each participant – guiding framing, storytelling, and tone – while ensuring their voices remained unmistakably their own. Then, in post-production, we shaped these raw, authentic moments into a cohesive, cinematic series – carefully edited, thoughtfully produced, and emotionally resonant.
The result? Films that feel intimate, human, and real. Because they are.

A Celebration That Looks Forward
This project wasn’t about nostalgia. It was about momentum.
At 25 years, Gates Cambridge isn’t looking back – it’s looking outward and ahead. And for us at Cambridge Filmworks, it was a privilege to help translate that vision into a film series that feels as global, ambitious, and as human as the scholarship itself.
These films don’t shout. They don’t over-explain. They simply let extraordinary people tell their own stories.
And sometimes, one minute is all it takes to inspire the next ripple.
