Beginning of a Journey: Gates Cambridge Orientation

Every story worth telling begins with a spark – a moment of connection, a shared laugh, a breath-taking landscape, or a conversation that opens new horizons.

When Gates Cambridge Trust invited us to document their Orientation Week in the Peak District – an essential rite of passage for new scholars entering a globally prestigious postgraduate scholarship – we knew we had the opportunity to do much more than film an event. We had a chance to illuminate the heartbeat of a community.

Finding Meaning in the Journey

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is transformative by design. It brings some of the brightest minds from around the world to study at the University of Cambridge, supporting them to become leaders committed to improving the lives of others. A key part of this transition is Orientation Week: a retreat where new scholars spend a few days together in the Peak District before the academic year begins.

For many, this experience is more than just a weekend trip. It’s where friendships are first forged, where shared laughter and teamwork create the foundation for lifelong collaboration, and where the diverse tapestry of cultures and disciplines becomes a living, breathing community. The stunning landscape with its rugged hills, open skies, and winding trails becomes both a backdrop and a metaphor for the adventure that lies ahead.

Capturing the Heart of Community

Our mission with this film was to portray not just the moments of Orientation – team-building activities, group conversations, impromptu adventures – but the spirit behind them. We wanted viewers to feel the warmth of new friendships, the curiosity of first encounters, and the shared wonder of scholars from across the globe connecting in a timeless part of the English countryside.

Unlike a traditional event film, this project required an approach that mirrored the emotional journey of the scholars themselves – from tentative introductions to unguarded smiles, from quiet contemplation on hilltops to the electric buzz of shared discovery.

Why Orientation Matters

Gates Cambridge Orientation Week isn’t just a pastoral weekend. It’s a cornerstone of the Gates Cambridge experience – a deliberate moment for scholars to form bonds that will carry them through demanding academic years and decades of future work. Many scholars have reflected that the friendships made during orientation endured throughout their time at Cambridge and beyond, underpinning collaborative research, personal support networks, and even global partnerships.

This is where barriers fall away, where a physicist from South America discovers shared passion with a public health advocate from Africa, where poets and engineers alike learn that their differences are strengths.
