Childhood Cancer – Angela’s Story

Childhood Cancer – Angela’s Story

Cancer remains a leading cause of death by disease in children around the world. Although survival rates have improved for some cancers in recent decades, rates have plateaued, and those who survive face an increased risk of developing a second cancer or other major health challenges and of premature death.

Angela has faced one of every parent’s worst fears – twice. In 2013, she lost her four-year-old daughter, Eilish, to cancer. Five years later, her son Aidan was diagnosed with cancer at age five.

With limited treatment options available, Angela watched both of her children endure gruelling courses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Around 400,000 children like Eilish and Aidan are diagnosed with cancer each year and they desperately need bespoke therapies. This is why LifeArc’s vision is to create a paradigm shift in how childhood cancers are diagnosed and treated. LifeArc are driving the development of new targeted treatments to give more children the chance of a cure and to reduce long-term side effects for survivors.

LifeArc are a not-for-profit life science organisation leading the way for change in rare diseases and supporting promising initiatives in global health.

Through their scientific capabilities, translational expertise and partnerships, LifeArc are ensuring great science achieves its potential and reaches patients faster.
